I have been a subscriber to BusinessWeek for many years, but the mag has gotten thinner and thinner, and just does not seem worth $70 a year any more. In fact a weekly newsmagazine of any kind seems kind of an anachronism in the age of Twitter, Facebook, CNN, and a news cycle that is about 5 minutes long.
When Bloomberg bought BusinessWeek I expected better, but instead got special features that appeared to be set in 6 point type and - wait - am I supposed to read this?
By contrast I adore and devour each monthly issue of Fast Company. Its heavy use of photography, highly readable mostly short articles, and focus on what's new and exciting seems highly appropriate for today's fast pace. It also seems to be much healthier judging by the number of pages and abundant advertising. And I can get all this for only $10 a month.
Fast Company also does a great job of daily updates, which has very timely news, some techy some not, but often fun to read as the magazine is. A perfect daily complement to the monthly publication.
I don't see why more publishers don't emulate the Fast Company model. Monthly publication. Daily email updates. And only $10 a year. Go for it, Mr. Bloomberg, even if you have to call it BusinessMonth.
